MICROPLASTICS IN WATER

What are microplastics?

The production and consumption of plastic that we have generated in less than a century is 8. 3 billion metric tons, and it is increasing. Only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, the rest ends up in the environment and its physical and chemical erosion results in microparticles that are dispersed through water and air.

Where are they?
According to the Spanish Journal of Public Health, the greatest presence of microplastics is found in the marine environment, but they are also found in terrestrial aquatic environments. That means they’re also in bottled water and tap water.

An Orb Media study analysed 250 bottles from different countries around the world and found, on average, 160 plastic microparticles per litre.
Another Orb Media study found that 72% of Europe’s tap water also contains microplastics.

What effects do they have?
Microparticles pollute water and air and have a direct effect on all living things, including humans, either by ingestion or by toxicity.

One of the big problems with microplastics is that they can contaminate through food packaging.

This is the case with bottled water. Several studies have identified the presence of plastic particles in all samples of bottled water analysed.
Because the particles are so small, there is a risk that they can infiltrate the bloodstream or organs such as the kidneys or liver.

What to do with microplastics in water?
With regard to bottled water, some laws have begun to restrict the use of plastics to single-use plastics to prevent microplastics from leaking into water or food and being ingested.
But using single-use plastic containers means consuming much more plastic, and more plastic means more microplastics everywhere!

To avoid all this nonsense, the best solution is to eliminate the consumption of plastic bottles and containers.

How to remove microplastics from tap water?

To remove microplastics from the tap water you can place a tap filter with microplastics filtration capability such as the coconut and carbon fiber filter for the tap such as Waly’s OX-2 Glossy stainless steel filter removes all microplastics, including microspheres and microfibers, as it filters elements up to 2 microns.

In addition, unlike similar filters, which are made of plastic, the Waly filter is made of stainless steel, so it does not leave or produce any more plastic waste.

How and when to use your Wally filter?
From Wally we have collected water information from all over Spain to offer you personalized recommendations for the use of your filter. Here you can find the time you should use the Wally filter of your tap depending on where you live.
