BISPHENOL A IN BOTTLED WATER
THE RISKS OF REUTILIZING PLASTIC BOTELS
Filling a plastic bottle may seem like a good way to reduce plastic consumption and save money, but it’s bad for your health.
93% of bottled water contains microplastics, according to a study by Orb Media. Many of these microplastics contain chemical agents such as Bisphenol A, parabens and toxic to the human body.
Contact of the plastic in the bottle with the water it contains is an aggravating factor in the contamination of the bottle water: the longer they are in contact, the more plastic is transmitted. That’s why there are many plastic bottles that can’t be used more than once, because they contaminate the liquid we drink.
What is Bisphenol A?
Bisphenol A (BPA) has been placed on the list of chemicals of “high concern” by the European Union. It is a chemical compound widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and the coatings of some packaging such as plastic bottles or food cans.
Adverse effects of Bisphenol A
Bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor, which means that it is a substance that alters the hormonal balance of humans.
According to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), it may cause adverse health effects such as alterations in cognitive, reproductive functions, metabolism or development of the mammary glands and other precursor effects of breast and prostate cancer. You can find more information here.
Bisphenol A, how to avoid it?
There are plastic bottles that do not contain BPA, brands that do not use BPA indicate it on the bottles and use less harmful plastics such as polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
These plastic bottles can be reused, but only a certain number of times, as other microplastics also seep into the water.
Best Measures to Prevent BPA:
- Remove plastic bottles, use glass or stainless steel bottles. We recommend the Waly bottle Waly&Go 500ml to take away and the Waly bottle Waly&Cool 1L to use at home, as they do not contain plastic.
- For tap water use a tap filter such as Waly’s OX-2 Glossy stainless steel filter that filters lime, chlorine, microplastics, heavy metals and other impurities from the water. Unlike other similar filters, it is made of stainless steel and does not contain plastic.
- If you use plastic bottles do not leave them in the sun, as it accelerates the plastic contamination of the water.
- Do not refill plastic bottles more times than recommended by the manufacturer.
