THE FUTURE OF WATER

Water is one of the most necessary resources on our planet, both for our survival and for the survival of other animals and living beings. But this precious commodity will be increasingly scarce and more in demand.

Current water situation
According to the WHO, in 2017, 2.1 billion people did not have safe drinking water, and 6 out of 10 people in the world lacked good water sanitation.
More than 70% of the planet's surface is covered with water, but only 2.5% is fresh water. In addition, part of this 2.5% is in the form of ice and another part is underground. Only 1% of the world's water is attainable and drinkable.

Taking into account the increase in temperature, due to climate change, and the increase in the world population, the situation of water stress will worsen in the coming years.

What is water stress?
Water stress occurs when the demand for water is greater than the amount of water available. To calculate water stress levels, it is customary to take into account only fresh water.
Prolonged situations of water stress and drought cause mass migrations, wars and famine. It also affects the economic and social development of all the countries that suffer it, to a greater or lesser extent.

According to the Water Outlook to 2050 report, the demand for water from 2000 to 2050 will have increased by 55% worldwide. The sectors that will most increase the demand for water are the industrial sector and electricity production.

There are currently two NASA satellites that measure the amount of water in the largest aquifers on the planet, half of which are suffering from water stress. There are already areas of the planet that import a large part of the fresh water they consume, an example is Mexico City, which imports 40% of the water.

According to the ranking of countries with water stress for 2040, by the World Resources Institute, the countries that will be most affected by drought in the coming years will be those in the Middle East. European countries also appear, Spain is in position number 32 in the ranking.

Future
The FAO has proposed Meta 6.4, which aims, by 2030, to increase the efficient use of water resources in all sectors and ensure the supply of fresh water.
At Waly we believe that the sustainable development goals of the future must be specifically aimed at improving the water situation and promoting good practices in the use of water by countries, industries and individuals.
